Water sampling in Big Dry Creek

Representative Project

WWE has provided watershed coordination services to the Big Dry Creek Watershed Association since 1997.  The Big Dry Creek watershed is a 110-square-mile area with a 42-mile length that drains from unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado to the South Platte River near Fort Lupton, Colorado.  Significant portions of the watershed are currently undergoing rapid urban development, transitioning from predominantly agricultural uses to include a mixture of residential, commercial and industrial uses.  The website is www.bigdrycreek.org.

WWE has provided overall watershed coordination to the Watershed Association, as well as conducted several technical evaluations and educational activities.  For example, WWE completed an integrated analysis of data collected along the main stem of Big Dry Creek including water quality, flow, habitat, benthic macroinvertebrate and fish data.

As part of educational efforts within the watershed, WWE produces semi-annual “State of the Watershed” newsletters and has compiled an educational resource notebook on stormwater and nonpoint source pollution.

WWE has also been instrumental in helping the watershed obtain annual grant funding from sources such as EPA’s Regional Geographic Initiative program, Colorado’s Nonpoint Source program and the U.S. Department of Energy.
