Mallards
in healthy habitat
Representative
Client
WWE
worked with the owners of a 500-acre ranch near Wolcott, Colorado to
improve wildlife habitat. The clients were especially interested in
improving their land for deer, elk, and waterfowl. In recent
decades, the ranch had been degraded from the spread of weeds
and had its wetlands and riparian areas trampled by
cattle.
WWE
developed a plan for restoring the wetlands and riparian areas,
re-vegetating the area surrounding a pond, and creating a foraging
area for deer and elk. The plan included fencing the perimeter of
the valuable wildlife habitats, seeding with plant species preferred
by deer and elk, and planting a diverse selection of shrubs and
trees valuable to many wildlife species.
To
obtain funding for these projects WWE consulted with the Natural
Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and
Colorado Division of Wildlife. To facilitate the process, WWE
identified government programs that may help fund the habitat
improvement proposed for the property. Meetings were then arranged
between the landowner and the funding agency.
