Groundwater Engineering

The Gunnison Energy study area is 756 square miles (about 484,000 acres) in size

Representative Project

WWE performed a comprehensive assessment and characterization of the groundwater and surface water resources on the southeastern flank of the Grand Mesa in Delta, Gunnison, and Mesa Counties, Colorado on behalf on Gunnison Energy.   Emphasis was placed on water resources that were in the vicinity of proposed exploratory natural gas wells. Similarly, because the target for natural gas exploration is the Mesaverde Formation, this formation was emphasized in the assessment of water resources. This complex formation is one of several bedrock units present in the study area.

The Mesaverde Formation is exposed at outcrops in some locations, is covered by unconsolidated deposits in others and is overlain by over 3,500 feet of other bedrock units beneath Grand Mesa.

A report was prepared by WWE in collaboration with Mr. C. Richard Dunrud, P.E., formerly with the U.S. Geological Survey, and Mr. John Rold, C.P.G., former Colorado State Geologist. A distinguished panel consisting of Dr. Neil Grigg, P.E. (Colorado State University), Dr. Tissa Illangasekare, P.E. (Colorado School of Mines), and Mr. Paul Oldaker, Consulting Hydrologist and Hydrogeologist, peer reviewed the report.
