Coal
Bed Methane-producing Basins
Representative Project
WWE
worked for Gunnison Energy Corporation to develop an extensive
baseline water resources report for proposed natural gas exploration
wells along the southeastern flank of the Grand Mesa in Delta
County, Colorado. This work was followed by an impact assessment for
four proposed gas wells on private lands.
Extensive
research and interpretation of hydrologic and hydrogeologic data
resulted in the finding that it was unlikely that these exploratory
wells would adversely impact water resources. This conclusion was
based on factors such as the protective measures planned during
drilling operations, the produced water management approach, the
limited extent of hydraulic fractures, the vertical separation
distance between water wells and the top of the hydraulic fracture
zones, and the lack of hydraulic connection between the fracture
zone and surface water. Additionally, potential impacts from
stormwater runoff would be controlled by carefully monitored and
maintained best management practices (BMPs).
