Representative Project
Clear
Creek is a valuable resource in the western part of the Denver
metropolitan area, but it is affected by several stressors,
including historic mine drainage, urban runoff, and water
diversions. Coors Brewing Company retained WWE to conduct a
bioassessment of Clear Creek from Golden, Colorado to its confluence
with the South Platte River to determine the overall health of
aquatic life and potential effects of the various stressors on the
creek.
Benthic
organisms were collected and a habitat assessment conducted at
multiple stations. An analysis was conducted to determine the
influence of water quality, habitat, and other stressors. U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency protocols were followed, but
modifications were made to account for the unique characteristics of
the creek, particularly dewatering. The study characterized the
current conditions in the creek and found that benthos were affected
to varying degrees by a host of factors. The study proved useful for
ongoing water quality management decisions.
