Principal Engineer and CFO Kenneth Wright founded Wright Water Engineers on May 1, 1961, to provide integrated water resources engineering services. Over the past five and a half decades, the company has been at the leading edge of the shift from engineering with slide rules to the Information Era. A great example of this is the Urban Storm Drainage Criteria Manual, first developed by Wright in 1969 for the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District. After years of the Manual’s evolution, WWE recently developed updates that are available online, interactive, and aimed at greener processes and outcomes.
Despite the global, technological, and economic changes that have occurred in the last half century, much at WWE has remained constant. WWE’s emphasis on public works and service to the community continues to be a focus.
Our founder Ken Wright continues to be involved in the day-to-day operation of the firm, alongside CEO Jonathan Jones, President Ian Paton and Chief Engineer Wayne Lorenz. WWE has always been employee-owned. “The same personal touch project management system that spurred growth from one person to more than forty people helps the company keep its competitive edge,” says Jones. In an era when many similar-sized competitors have been swallowed up by larger conglomerates, WWE maintains its independence.
Each year has brought new challenges and achievements. According to Lorenz, “Fifty-five years was just the beginning.” Strong and vibrant offices are maintained in Glenwood Springs, Colorado (managed by Vice President Jonathan Kelly and established in 1971) and Durango, Colorado (managed by Vice President Peter Foster and established in 1990). Surface water hydrology and stormwater drainage assignments are overseen by Vice President Andrew Earles, WWE’s groundwater program is directed by Vice President Gary Witt, Water Rights are directed by Vice President Patricia Flood, and Water Policy and Regulation are directed by Vice President Jane Clary.
